This Privacy Policy explains how Castmates ("Castmates", "we", "us", or "our") handles information in connection with the Castmates iOS application (the "App") and the website get-castmates.com (the "Site"). Castmates is developed and operated from Croatia. By using the App or Site, you agree to this Policy.
The short version
Castmates is built to be private by design. The AI runs entirely on your iPhone. There are no accounts and no Castmates servers that receive your conversations. Your characters, chats, and the memories the App keeps are stored locally on your device and are not transmitted to us. The only data that leaves your device is anonymous, aggregate usage analytics — event counts that help us understand how the App is used, never the content of your conversations and nothing that identifies you.
Information we do not collect
- Your conversations. The text you write and the AI's replies are generated and stored on your device. We never receive, see, or store them.
- Accounts. Castmates has no sign-up, login, email, or user profile. We do not ask for your name or contact information.
- Custom characters. Characters you create, and any photo you choose as an avatar, stay on your device. We do not collect them.
Information that is processed (and by whom)
Purchases and subscriptions
If you buy a subscription, the purchase is processed by Apple through the App Store. We never receive your payment-card details. To manage entitlements (whether your subscription is active) we use RevenueCat, which processes a randomly generated, anonymized app-user identifier together with subscription and receipt data from Apple. This is not linked to your real-world identity by us. See Apple's Privacy Policy and RevenueCat's Privacy Policy.
AI model downloads
To run on-device, the App downloads one or more language-model files once. That download is fetched from a third-party model host (e.g. a Hugging Face content delivery network), which may process your IP address and request metadata to deliver the file, subject to its own privacy policy. The download contains no information about you or your conversations.
Device diagnostics
Depending on your iOS settings, Apple may share aggregated, anonymized crash and usage diagnostics with developers. You can control this in Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements on your iPhone.
Anonymous usage analytics
To understand how the App is used in aggregate, Castmates records a small set of anonymous events — for example app opens, onboarding progress, paywall views, and counts of messages sent — using Mixpanel. These events contain no message content and nothing that identifies you; they are tied only to a random identifier generated on your device (not your Apple ID, email, or advertising identifier), and IP-based location is disabled. This data is used solely for product analytics and is never used to track you across other apps or websites. See Mixpanel's Privacy Policy.
The website
The Site is a static marketing page. It sets no advertising or tracking cookies. It loads web fonts from Google Fonts, which may receive your IP address to serve those fonts. Our hosting provider may keep standard, short-lived server logs for security and reliability.
How your on-device data is stored
Conversations, characters, profile details, and memories are stored locally using your device's standard app storage, protected by your device's security (passcode/Face ID and iOS encryption). Because this data lives only on your device, anyone with access to your unlocked device may be able to view it.
Your choices and rights
- Delete everything. You can clear a conversation's memory in the App, or delete the App entirely — removing the App deletes the on-device data it created.
- Subscriptions. Manage or cancel anytime in your App Store account settings.
- Diagnostics. Control sharing in your iOS settings as described above.
Because we do not hold your personal data on our servers, there is generally no account for us to access, correct, or delete on your behalf. If you have a request or question, contact us below.
Children's privacy
Castmates is rated 18+ and is not directed to children. You must be at least 18 years old (or the minimum age required in your country, if higher) to use the App. Optional Mature content is further gated behind a subscription, an age confirmation, and a parental content-lock PIN. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.
International users
The App is designed so your personal content stays on your device regardless of where you are. The limited third-party processing described above (Apple, RevenueCat, model hosts, font and hosting providers) may occur in countries other than your own, subject to those providers' policies.
California privacy rights (CCPA/CPRA)
If you are a California resident, the CCPA/CPRA gives you rights over your personal information. Castmates runs on your device, and the only data we collect is anonymous, aggregate usage analytics that is not linked to your identity, so we hold little or no "personal information" about you to disclose, delete, or correct, and we do not "sell" or "share" personal information as those terms are defined under California law. You may still contact us to ask about these rights.
European privacy rights (GDPR / UK GDPR)
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you have rights including access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection. Because your content stays on your device and we do not hold personal data about you on our servers, in most cases there is no personal data for us to act on. The limited processing by Apple and RevenueCat for purchases relies on the legal bases of performing our contract with you and our legitimate interest in operating the App. To exercise any right, contact us below.
Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. We will revise the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice. Continued use after changes take effect means you accept the updated Policy.
