This page explains Castmates' content, its 18+ age rating, and the safeguards that protect users. It is intended both for people deciding whether the App is right for them and for App Review.
What Castmates is
Castmates is an offline, on-device AI roleplay app. Users chat with fictional characters that run entirely on the user's iPhone. There are no accounts, no Castmates servers, and no user-to-user contact — conversations are private to the device and are never transmitted to us or shared with other users.
Default experience is safe-for-work
By default, Castmates operates in a safe-for-work mode. Romance, emotional drama, and mature themes are present, but the default experience steers away from explicit content, and an on-device guard fades intimate scenes to black.
Mature mode is gated and opt-in
Adults can opt into a mature mode for romantic and suggestive content. Castmates is not a pornography app: mature mode centers on romance, intimacy, and suggestion and is designed to fade to black rather than depict explicit sexual acts. Mature mode is unavailable until all of the following are satisfied:
- An active subscription (Castmates Pro).
- Age verification — the user must confirm they are 18 or older via a date-of-birth check, which is stored and reused (see Age Assurance below).
- Parental controls — if a guardian has set a content-lock PIN on the device, the PIN is required before mature mode can be enabled.
- A device with sufficient memory to run the mature model; otherwise mature mode is not offered.
What we do not allow
The following are prohibited and are blocked by an on-device content filter that applies to both chat messages and user-created characters:
- Any sexualization of minors. Messages or character descriptions that involve a minor in a sexual context are refused — the App will not generate a reply or save the character.
- Other clearly illegal content.
These prohibitions apply in every mode, including mature mode, and cannot be turned off.
Age assurance
Before any mature content is available, the user completes a one-time date-of-birth age check. Entries under 18 are refused, and the result is stored so the check is not repeated unnecessarily. This replaces a simple "I am 18" tap with a date-of-birth confirmation.
Parental controls
A parent or guardian can set a content-lock PIN in Settings. When the lock is on, turning on mature content requires the PIN, so the device can be handed to a minor with mature content restricted. The PIN is stored only as a salted hash.
Reporting and acting on content
Every AI message and every character includes a Report action. The reported item can be removed immediately on the device, and the report can be sent to our team at [email protected]. Because everything is on-device, removal is immediate and local.
Fiction, not advice
All characters are fictional and exist for entertainment. Nothing the App generates — including from characters framed as coaches, mentors, or similar — is professional, medical, legal, or psychological advice, and it should not be relied on as such.
Privacy
Castmates has no accounts, and your conversations, characters, and memories stay on the device. The only data that leaves the device is anonymous, aggregate usage analytics (no conversation content and nothing that identifies you). See our Privacy Policy for details.
