Frequently asked questions

Is Character AI down right now?
This page can't tell you, because it doesn't track live status. Check Character AI's own status page at status.character.ai, an outage tracker such as Downdetector, and recent posts on the r/CharacterAI subreddit. If other people are reporting the same problem in the last few minutes, it's an outage. If nobody is, the problem is probably on your side: your connection, an old app version or your login.
Why does Character AI stop working?
A cloud chat app needs its servers, your login and your connection to all work at the same time. Heavy traffic, a bad update, a problem at a hosting provider or a login issue can each stop the chat. Which one it is isn't always public, so treat any single explanation with caution.
What can I do while it's down?
Wait a few minutes and reload, try another network or the web version, update or reinstall the app, and save any chat you care about. You can also use a different app for the evening. Outages are usually short, but you can't speed one up.
Is there an AI character app that works without servers?
Castmates does. After a one-time model download of about 2 GB, every reply is generated on your iPhone, so it works in airplane mode and there's no server of ours in the loop. It needs an iPhone with 6 GB of RAM or more.
Is Castmates a full replacement for Character AI?
No. Castmates has a curated cast of 35 characters plus your own custom characters and imported character cards, not a huge community library. The free plan includes 30 messages a day and needs no account.
